How Often Is The Zacks Rank Updated?
The Zacks Rank is updated daily on Zacks.com and can be viewed by Zacks Premium subscribers.

Not All Stocks Have A Zacks Rank. How Does Zacks Determine Which Stocks Are Covered By The Zacks Rank?
A Zacks Rank of #1 to #5 is only given to stocks that are currently covered/researched by the brokerage community. That is because the Zacks Rank is focused on earnings estimate revisions and past earnings surprises. Currently this universe contains approximately 4,400 of the 10,000 publicly traded stocks. Note that the 5,600 companies not represented in the Zacks universe are amongst the smallest and most speculative shares traded. Thus, people who research on our site rarely come across a stock they are interested in that is not covered by the Zacks Rank.

I Found Zacks #1 Rank List In The “Portfolio” Section of the Site. Where Are the Listings of the Other Four Rankings?
Zacks Premium subscribers can view the complete list of stocks for any of the five Zacks Ranks by using Custom Screener.

Log into Zacks.com (use anchor tags to link to How to Log Into Zacks.com) and follow these steps
    1. Click on the “Screening” tab located at the top of most pages
    2. Click on the “Custom Screener” link in the left-hand menu (or click here)
    3. There is a drop down box entitled “Select Category”. Scroll down and select “Zacks Rank”
    4. Next to “Current Zacks Rank” is a drop down box that allows you to select whether you want an exact Zacks Rank by using the equal sign “=” or if you want a larger set by using “>=” or “<=”. For example, if you want a full list of Zacks #2 Rank stocks, select “=” from the drop down and enter the number “2” in the entry box.
    5. Press the “Click to Screen” button.
    6. You can either select other variables to screen by or start running the report for the list. Let’s assume that you are finished. Just click the “Run Report” button in the bottom left corner.
    7. Put check marks next to any variables you want displayed in the reports output. When done with check marks, scroll to bottom and click “Submit Query” button.
    8. Your report will now appear on the screen. To print it up, then right-click on the screen, then select print.

What Is The Difference Between The Zacks Rank And Average Brokerage Recommendation (ABR)?
Zacks provides the average brokerage recommendation (ABR) for thousands of stocks for most of the leading investment web sties. The ABR is the calculated average of the actual recommendations (strong buy, hold, sell etc) made by the brokerage firms for a given stock. The ABR is typically displayed with decimals (e.g. 1.52) versus the Zacks Rank, which is only shown in whole numbers (e.g. 1, 2, 3, etc.).

Although the ABR is displayed in a range of 1-5, it should not be confused as having any similarity to the Zacks Rank. The ABR is solely based on brokerage recommendations. Analysts employed by brokerage firms have been and continue to be overly optimistic with their recommendations. For every "Strong Sell" recommendation, brokerage firms assign FIVE "Strong Buy" recommendations. Although brokerage recommendations may have some value, on average, they have not proven to be successful in directing investors to the stocks with the highest probabilities of rising in price.

In comparison, the Zacks Rank is applied proportionately across the universe of all stocks for which brokerage analysts provide earnings estimates for the current year. At all times, the same number of Zacks #1 ("Strong Buy") and Zacks #5 ("Strong Sell") rankings are assigned. Further, Zacks #1 Rank stocks have generated an average annual return of 33% since 1988 versus just 5.2% for the Zacks #5 Rank stocks. In other words, the Zacks Rank will help you identify the winners and avoid the losers in all market conditions.

  • What is Zacks Equity Research?
Our firm has long believed that that quantitative models (like the Zacks Rank) can predict stock prices more accurately than individual analysts. However we also recognize that models are most effective when they are employed by analysts who have deep fundamental knowledge of the company and its industry. Consequently, Zacks Equity Research combines Zacks quantitative models with the insight provided by experienced equity analysts to create superior long-term stock recommendations.

What Is the Difference Between an Analyst Report and a Snapshot Report?
Zacks Equity Research provides two type of reports: Analyst and Snapshot.

Analyst Reports contain the analyst recommendations as well as their in-depth written description on the company. These reports can range from 5 to 20 pages on the individual stock. Or simply, as many pages as necessary to impart to you why to buy, hold or sell the stock. Again, these reports are available for the 1150 stocks covered by our analyst team.

Snapshot Reports contain the quantitative recommendations and a quick overview of the key fundamental drivers behind the recommendation. This is contained in a 1 page document for approximately 3250 stocks not covered by the analyst.
