Retail sales rose 0.5% last month on an ex-auto basis. This estimate from the Commerce Department helped to send shares of many retailers higher yesterday.

Though the increase might seem strange given that unemployment is rising towards 10%, many consumers are starting to spend. This is leading several retailers to increase their earnings guidance.
