There were a slew of mildly positive economic reports on Wednesday that had us in the green most of the day until it coasted into a breakeven finish. The Challenger report shows that planned layoffs are coming down. ADP showed that we lost very few jobs in February and that is usually a good precursor to when we start gaining jobs. Then the ISM Non-Mfg survey came in nicely above expectations. Then the cherry on top was the Fed Beige book which gave the kind of cautiously optimistic tones we are used to hearing from the Fed.
Thursday brings the weekly jobless claims that unexpectedly jumped to 496,000 last week. Now the consensus is for 475K this week. However, it better be closer to 450K to give the market a boost. Finally on Friday is the February Employment Situation report which gives the most complete picture of the jobs conditions in the US. If these two reports are neutral to positive, then the market should continue to advance. If not, then we will retreat from these levels.
