See-Sawing Continues

Friday up. Monday down. Tuesday up. Wednesday down.

Welcome to the new normal for the market.

Simply we have a wrestling match between bullish and bearish sentiment. The bulls push ahead when odds of Euro debt containment improve. And the bears return fire when the odds worsen.

On Wednesday the odds did seem to get worse as polls showed another dead heat with upcoming Greek elections possibly causing yet a 3rd round of voting. Meaning uncertainty will be pushed out further (and as we all know Mr. Market hates uncertainty).

Then add in a mediocre Retail Sales report to the mix giving bears ample fuel. Note that if the environment was more positive, then this report would have been easy to brush off as inconsequential.

Looking ahead we have the weekly Jobless Claims report today. Industrial Production on Friday. Then further scrutiny of all things Europe.

My prediction is that we continue to see-saw in a tight range of 1270 to 1330 until a clear catalyst emerges. My hope is that the catalyst is a series of large and impressive new programs from the Europeans to contain the debt situation. This should get key bond rates on the decline and stocks on the rise.

Far too many investors read the above as; See-sawing = sideways markets = no ability to make money.

To that I say... HOGWASH!
