This was the initiative organised by Aga Khan Education Service Kenya and Festival of Friendship-Education Committee for a youth forum. The forum titled "Brainstorm- your options" was held on Saturday at the Aga Khan Pavillion, Nairobi.
The guests speaks were Salim Amin (Chairman, A24 Media), Darshan Chandaria (Director, Chandaria Industries Ltd), Joe Maye (Head of Branches & Alternate Channels Diamond Trust Bank), Joshua Oigara (Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Commercial Bank), Nzioka Waita (Director of Corporate Affairs, Safaricom), Ahsan Manji (MD Weetabix EA Ltd), and Kamal Pattni (Regional BD Manager Kaizen Institute).
This forum was the first of its kind to bring different communities to collaborate on the same platform. The speakers shared inspirational personal stories on how they achieved their success and continue to inspire themselves and their teams. The objective of the talk was to inspire the young to make better choices and have an opportunity to work with the guests in some way or the other. Nzioka Waita pointed out that he has not seen enough Asian CVs coming his way and this is something he hopes that will change especially through more inter-community talks. While Darshan Chandaria, 27, who runs Chandaria Industries maintained, "in Kenya the best business is done by networking."
Sikh Union Club's pool opening:
It was a gathering of past committee members and current ones last Wednesday at the Sikh Union Club, Nairobi for the opening of the new swimming pool. The chief guest Harbhajan Sembi came to Kenya with the dream of buying a bicycle and going back to India. However he stayed on and has become a successful businessman. "Money can be used as a tool and be dangerous, but love is something you cannot buy and is what you must look to gain," he said. Another guest speaker was the first Kenyan Asian female MP, Sonia Birdi who to mark Labour Day encouraged the community to continue participating in the building of the country.
At the opening ceremony the current Sikh Union Club Chairman, Muna Bansal also announced other changes to the club that included the change of use of the cricket academy to restaurants and the extension of the current squash court into a bigger cultural hall. Thus, there are increasing signs that the club might become more of a social venue than the sporting hub it was in the past.
Swami Vivekananda 150th Anniversary:
The 150th birth Anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda saw an important service conducted on April 28 at the Shri Ram Mandir, Parklands Nairobi.
A blood donation and health check-up camp was organised by the celebration committee in association with the Hindu Religious & Service Centre and saw a turnout of over 300 people. The University Students of Hindu Association (USHA) also participated to provide their expertise and medical assistance wherever required.
On this servitude occasion, over 75 people pledged to the Lions Club that when they die, they will have their eyes donated to the centre as part of the Swami Vivekananda Eye Pledge camp.
