May 13, 2013 (Ames Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two people had to be rescued from the Des Moines River in Boone County over the weekend after their kayaks got hung up on a log jam under a railroad bridge.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office received a call about 2:30 p.m. Sunday that two kayakers were caught against a log jam that had developed around a pier under the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge west of Boone and couldn't get free.
The sheriff's office's search and rescue team put a boat in the water upstream, grabbed the kayakers one at a time, and took them to shore, Chief Deputy Rick Lampe said.
The kayakers were both from Cedar Rapids. Neither one was injured, although one was in the water for a while and did complain of possible hypothermia. No one was taken to a hospital.
Lampe said the Des Moines River is running "bank full" in Boone County and that anyone going out on the river should be extra careful.
"It's running fairly fast and it's fairly cold yet," Lampe said. "People just need to be careful. The current in certain parts of the river swirls and is a lot stronger than people think, and that's what got these people in trouble."
