Apparel retailer Urban Outfitters Inc. (URBN - Analyst Report) recently posted sales data for the months of November and December. Sales rose 8% year over year to $716 million in the said period.

Comparable Retail segment net sales (including comparable direct-to-consumer channel) rose 3%. Comparable Retail segment net sales rose 11% at Anthropologie and 21% at Free People but declined 6% at Urban Outfitters. Net sales grew 21% at the Wholesale segment.

For the 11 month-period ended Dec 31, 2013, Urban Outfitters’ net sales rose 11% year over year to $2.9 billion. Nets sales at wholesale segment grew 19% while comparable Retail segment net sales grew 7%.

Further, the company opened 36 outlets during the 11 month-period comprising 15 Urban Outfitters outlets, 12 Free People stores and 9 Anthropologie outlets. It also closed 1 store each of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie brands.

Other retailers that came strongly during the holiday season that appeared to be tough one include Macy's, Inc. (M - Analyst Report), Rite Aid Corporation (RAD - Analyst Report) and Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST - Analyst Report). Macy’s comparable-store sales for the November and December period combined rose 3.6%, while including departments licensed to third parties, it rose 4.3%.

Costco reported a 6% year-over-year rise in net sales to $11.53 billion for December (five weeks ended Jan 5, 2014) while comps rose 3%. Drugstore chain retailer, Rite Aid reported improved comps for December (4 weeks ended Dec 28, 2013) on Jan 3, 2014. Comps for the month rose 2.9% from the prior-year period, primarily driven by higher comps at its front-end and pharmacy stores.
