Chemical company Celanese Corporation announced that it is helping IVP Plastics in the progress of gas-assist injection molding by providing material and processing expertise that the latter is using to reduce weight and costs of tubular cooling system parts for automotive engines.
IVP Plastics’ unique application of gas-assist molding technology is capable of creating a one-shot injection-molded, non-linear hollow shape with 90 degree turns and molded fastening points.
Celanese and IVP Plastics share a long term relationship in working towards solving material challenges. Celanese’ Fortron polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) works in extreme heat and difficult operating conditions and is an ideal solution from a molding and performance perspective.
Fortron PPS is a high-temperature semicrystalline polymer that provides high thermal stability, very high chemical resistance, stiffness, strength and creep resistance- including automotive/aircraft fuels and fluids, strong acids and bases (pH 2 to 12) — even at elevated temperatures of up to 240 degrees Celsius (464 degrees Fahrenheit). It is used to replace metals and thermosets in various automotive, electrical/electronics, aerospace, fluid handling, and industrial and consumer applications.
The IVP Plastics molding process cuts steps in the manufacturing process and removes traditional welding, brazing and plating processes. The process delivers a more dimensionally accurate component with no chance of rust and decreases component cost and weight by as much as 50%. Fortron PPS provides cost savings through lower reject rates, reduction in number of fabrication steps, shorter cycle times and higher process reliability.
