Today we are featuring top-performing “Small-Cap" equity mutual funds, which primarily invest in equity securities of companies that have market capitalizations of less than $2 billion.

3 Solid Choices

Buffalo Small Cap (BUFSX) seeks long-term growth of capital. The fund invests primarily in common stocks, preferred stocks, convertible preferred stocks warrants and rights of domestic companies that have a market capitalization of $1 billion or less at the time of purchase.

The fund has an expense ratio of 1.01%. As of December 2008, its portfolio turnover was 8%.

Among top holdings at the fund are Waddell & Reed Financial Inc. (WDR - Analyst Report), MKS Instruments Inc. (MKSI - Snapshot Report) and DeVry Inc. (DV - Analyst Report).

Queens Road Small Cap Value (QRSVX) pursues its objective of long-term growth by following a value-oriented investment strategy in which investments are selected based on their potential for capital growth. It is non-diversified.

Steve Scruggs has managed the fund since its inception in June 2002. The fund’s total returns have outperformed its benchmark index in the last 1-, 3- and 5-year periods.

Darling International (DAR - Snapshot Report), Scholastic Corp. (SCHL - Snapshot Report) and Tellabs Inc. (TLAB - Analyst Report) are some of the fund’s key holdings.

Needham Small Cap Growth (NESGX) was incepted in May 2002. The fund seeks long-term, tax-efficient capital appreciation by investing primarily in equity securities of smaller public companies with well managed, financially strong businesses.

Unit holders need to make a minimum initial investment of $5,000 to enter this Zacks#1 Rank “Strong Buy”) fund. The fund distributes dividends annually.

The fund’s major Holdings include Conmed Corp. (CNMD), ICx Technologies Inc. (ICXT) and Cognex Corp. (CGNX - Snapshot Report).
