Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger Stations Coming to a Local Ruby Tuesday (RT) Near You

Read MoreHide Full Article

When you think of individuals who own a Tesla Model S, what places do you imagine they go to eat? Restaurants like Girl and the Goat or Alinea are probably places that initially come to mind at first, but the real question should be is where does Ruby Tuesday fall in this hypothetical list?

Ruby Tuesday announced Friday that the company is teaming up with Tesla Motors (TSLA - Free Report) to open a series of Tesla Supercharger Stations. The first station recently opened at the Ruby Tuesday location in Miner, Missouri – a town with a population of 961 and Route 55 running through it– with additional stations at other Ruby Tuesday locations currently in the planning stages or under construction.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Tesla Motors to offer our guests a place where they can charge their Tesla vehicle while enjoying a delicious meal,” stated David Skena, chief marketing officer of Ruby Tuesday. “Expanding the Supercharger network to include Ruby Tuesday is good for both Tesla owners and our restaurants alike. We look forward to deepening our relationship with Tesla and opening additional Supercharger Stations in Ruby Tuesday markets around the country in the near future.”

Superchargers are strategically placed to allow Tesla owners to drive from station to station with minimal stops, traveling up to 270 miles. The Tesla Supercharger is substantially more powerful than any existing charging technology, providing up to 120 kilowatts of power and replenishing up to 170 miles of range in 30 minutes.

This partnership appears to be an odd one. Ruby Tuesday’s year-over-year sales growth is down 5.05%. The company’s stock price has been steadily declining for a year as well. According to the press release on the subject, drivers can “take a dining break at Ruby Tuesday and get back on the road at full charge.”

If anything, Tesla made a deal with Ruby Tuesday knowing that their parking lots have many available spots for their drivers to easily park and recharge their vehicles. Sure, going to Ruby Tuesday’s famous salad bar is always a solid choice. But, if Tesla wanted to partner with an All-American chain sit-down restaurant named after a day of the week, why not TGI Friday’s? $5 mozzarella sticks and boneless buffalo wings as specials? That sounds a whole lot better than a salad. Or even partner with Chili’s, a Brinker International (EAT - Free Report) subsidiary. Killer margaritas and bottomless chips and salsa? Count me in!

In light of this news, neither TSLA nor RT stock has had much movement, with shares of RT up just under 2% during afternoon trading being the most notable.
