Read MoreHide Full Article

With U.S. Presidential conventions right around the corner, all of the four leading wireless carriers of U.S. viz. Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ - Free Report) , AT&T Inc. (T - Free Report) , T-Mobile US Inc. (TMUS - Free Report) and Sprint Corp. (S - Free Report) have geared up anticipating the heavy traffic.

The Republican National Convention will take place in Cleveland from Jul 18-21 and the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia in Jul 25-28. Attendance of around 50,000 people is expected in both of these events.

Increasing Capacity

The planning for upgrading the capacity began months ago for these carriers and they have already boosted their network in the two cities mentioned above. For instance Verizon increased its capacity by 550% in the Wells Fargo Center which is the main venue for the DNC. It is during these types of high profile events that the wireless operators prepare for the utmost and use every type of resource to ensure a smooth functioning of its networks.

Most of the wireless operators use small cell technology to boost coverage near the venue. Some even use Wi-Fi technology to ensure coverage inside the arenas where the event takes place.

Spill Over Benefits

While the carriers are busy managing their networks for the main event, their drive to improve capacity and max out the overall radio frequency is certainly going to help the areas which were previously shunned. Additionally, smaller venues like hotels, hospitals and universities are also going to get a major lift in terms of network coverage by virtue of this network capacity expansion drive.

The Bottom Line

As U.S. prepares for the Presidential Race conventions, the wireless carriers will look for increased revenues from the data usage. Moreover, this is a major opportunity for the carriers to exhibit their capacity to handle network traffic efficiently which can act as a catalyst to attract more subscribers and business customers going forward.

Thus, it comes as no surprise as to why these carriers are leaving no stone unturned to enhance their capacity.  However, will these increased investments help these telecom players in the long run? We leave it to time to answer that.
