Read MoreHide Full Article

AT&T Inc. (T - Free Report) , the U.S. telecom giant, is set to launch an all-in-one Internet of Things (IoT) Starter Kit in association with Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO - Free Report) and Avnet Inc. (AVT - Free Report) , to help developers initiate their Internet of Things (IoT) projects. The IoT Starter Kit is equipped with all the equipment needed for IoT innovation, including connectivity, LTE hardware, application services and cloud storage. The new IoT Starter Kit will be available at AT&T or Avnet for $99 plus applicable taxes and fees, beginning Aug 2016.

What is Internet of Things?

IoT is a system that enables any physical electronic device with a valid IP-address to transfer data seamlessly over a wireless network. We expect wireless networks to provide the primary impetus to the telecom industry. In this regard, the IoT platform has the potential to emerge as the numero uno factor for growth in the space. IoT is a network of physical objects embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity that enables it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with connected devices. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications is a key example. IoT needs exceptionally fast wireless links to run effectively.

The IoT Starter Kit to Advance Innovation

The new IoT Starter Kit is a product of AT&T assembled by integrating solutions from Cisco and Avnet. The IoT Starter Kit is equipped with an AT&T Global SIM, an LTE modem, cloud storage, expandable development board, microcontroller and access to AT&T Control Centre and AT&T Flow Designer. The Starter Kit is engineered in such a fashion that developers can benefit from 4G LTE connectivity, helping tech innovators create IoT solutions in a more efficient manner. Such a "plug and play" model will help developers start an IoT project from scratch as they will have the entire package of the required solutions

Being the innovative minds in the IoT space, many developers have opined that the Starter Kit is designed such that it 'just works’, thus enabling them to focus on their development time which further makes their product unique.

The AT&T Control Center offers a secure way to provide and manage IoT devices, at low cost. Access to this Control Center also allows developers, quick entry and growth in the increasing IoT business across industries.

However, the most difficult factor is choosing between the rapidly changing hardware and software.

AT&T is also working on the development of a new IoT starter kit in collaboration with International Business Machines Corporation (IBM - Free Report) Watson IoT and Microsoft Corporation’s (MSFT - Free Report) Azure IoT Suite.

The Bottom line

The Internet of Things is not about 'things' but about ‘service’.

Since IoT developers play a key role in the development of applications that offer new, valuable services through connected devices, it can be assumed that the latest integrated IoT Starter Kit will help drive success for developers looking to build or enable connected service businesses.

AT&T currently has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
