JetBlue Plans Aruba Flights; Cuba Service Starts Today

JetBlue Airways (JBLU - Free Report) plans to initiate operations from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood to Aruba – a popular Caribbean destination. The carrier is gearing up to launch daily non-stop flights between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), Aruba.

The service is slated to start from Jan 4, 2017. JetBlue will operate Airbus A-320 aircraft on the route and will offer services like broadband, snacks and drinks, free DIRECTV programs, SiriusXM radio channels and movies.

JetBlue in Aruba

Currently, JetBlue operates daily flights to Aruba from New York-JFK and Boston. The company also offers weekly Mint flights from these airports on a seasonal basis. Mint is JetBlue’s premium service which comes with lie-flat seating and special dining. The Mint service is expected to be launched on Sep 10 in New York and on Nov 5 in Boston.

Aruba is steadily gaining popularity among American tourists as is evident from the 7.7% hike in U.S. traveler count in 2015. The new service is expected to boost travel demand further in the region, as per Ronella Tjin Asjoe-Croes, the Chief Executive Office (CEO) of Aruba Tourism Authority.

Expansion of Fort Lauderdale Port

JetBlue has been actively growing its network in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. The airline plans on expanding services in the region to 140 daily flights over the next few years. There have been various announcements made by the company related to new nonstop flights which include services to Nashville, TN, New Orleans, San Diego, Barbados and Quito, Ecuador.

Cuba Flight Launch

Fort Lauderdaleis also set to witness a historic moment today. JetBlue’s maiden flight to Santa Clara, Cuba is set to be launched today, Aug 31, marking the resumption of commercial flights between U.S. and Cuba after more than 50 years. Notably, JetBlue is the largest airline at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood.
