ViaSat, Eutelsat's In-Flight Internet Services Now for SAS

Read MoreHide Full Article

California-based broadband services and technology company, ViaSat Inc. (VSAT - Free Report) , and its long-time partner Eutelsat Communications, recently clinched a new service contract from Scandinavian Airlines (“SAS”).

Winning this contract strengthens ViaSat’s position in the European market. It is also in line with its strategy to penetrate the commercial airline market by offering high-quality satellite-based internet connectivity.

SAS Boosts Wi-Fi Speed

SAS is in the midst of a technological revamp, offering WiFi speed as high as 12 Mbps and beyond, for passengers in its short- and medium-haul fleet. This is to ensure that they enjoy streaming music and films uninterruptedly while on board. The first WiFi-enabled SAS aircraft will be operational from the second half of 2017.

Per the contract, ViaSat is bringing its comprehensive range of vertically-integrated in-flight Internet system, including supplemental type certificates, wireless IFE system support and passenger-facing access portals, to the table. Moreover, the company’s partner, Eutelsat's high-capacity Ka-band broadband satellite – KA-SAT – will also be deployed in SAS aircraft to offer an end-to-end connectivity service.

Booming Commercial Airline Business

ViaSat’s Commercial Air business is proving to be one of the strongest tailwinds, fuelling growth in recent times. Several major airlines across the globe are turning toward this technology company for improving their internet services. ViaSat’s in-flight Internet services are gaining traction with commercial flights like Virgin America and Boeing increasingly adopting them. This has been driving significant revenue growth over the past few quarters. During first-quarter fiscal 2017, the company’s high-speed in-flight Internet service was selected by American Airlines for its new Boeing 737 MAX fleet.

Moreover, the patnership with Eutelsat is also advancing well with the companies offering state-of-the-art in-flight Internet services in Europe. During second-quarter fiscal 2017, VisaSat and Eutelsat signed an agreement to provide in-flight Wi-Fi services for Finnair and EL AL Israel Airlines. ViaSat is also reportedly supplying Wi-Fi services to Air Force One and other government aircraft. We believe that ViaSat’s bandwidth productivity and leading position in end-markets are likely to assist it in grabbing a greater market share compared to its competitors.

ViaSat currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks in the same space that are worth a look now include Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI - Free Report) , Clearfield, Inc.
