CenturyLink Completes Largest G.fast Rollout in Wisconsin

Read MoreHide Full Article

CenturyLink Inc. recently completed the rollout of the largest G.fast standard in its copper DSL lines in Platteville, WI. The telecom operator has connected 44 apartments using Calix Inc.’s (CALX - Free Report) AXOS G.fast solution. Notably, G.fast works well in densely populated areas providing speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

Why G.fast?

Telecom operators are mainly focusing on increasing their fiber footprint. However, there are areas where fiber networks are yet to reach. Thus, telecom operators look to provide alternate solutions to provide high-speed Internet service through the existing copper networks. G.fast is one such networking protocol that allows higher Internet speeds within a short range of the Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC).

Although G.fast hasn’t seen significant uptake among the telecom operators in the U.S., the technology is gradually coming into the limelight. Windstream Holdings Inc. has deployed the same in its multi dwelling units (MDU) in Nebraska this July. AT&T Inc. (T - Free Report) is reported to have shown interest in the technology as well.

The Bottom Line

Intensifying competition has compelled CenturyLink to boost Internet speeds. The company has been active in deploying fiber infrastructure across the country. Moreover, it seeks to expand its Prism IPTV video service. Thus, we believe that the latest G.fast deployment will help CenturyLink increase its presence in other markets. Additionally, enabling high-speed Internet across the current copper infrastructure will help the company save costs.

CenturyLink currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
