Intel Corporation (INTC - Free Report) and Luxottica Group SpA (LUX - Free Report) owned fashion brand Oakley recently launched a smart eyewear called Radar Pace that features a real-time voice activated coaching system.

The smart eyewear is available for purchase at select Oakley retail stores and on Oakley.com.

Features of Radar Pace

Tracks: The device is capable of collecting and analyzing personal performance data such as heart rate, cadence, speed, time, pace etc. to provide athletes actionable feedback that is easy to understand and implement in one’s workout plan.

Coaches: Just like a real-life coach, Radar Pace creates a training program for the athlete based on his/her past training accomplishments and sets goals based on that.

Responds: The device lets athletes interact with it by asking questions with the help of Intel Real Speech. This enables athletes to receive real-time feedback on their performance.

Why this Move?

Intel has invested more than four years to develop this technology. The launch is a part of the company’s strategy to put its hardware and software into as many devices as it possibly can.

Intel has been through various strategic shifts with CEO Brian Krzanich at its helm. The company is now gradually shifting its focus from traditional desktops to smarter devices that comprise the next wave of future computing.

Scope of Wearables

As per a recent IDC report, worldwide shipments for wearables is expected to reach 213.6 million units by 2020. While wristbands and watches are expected to drive volume growth, eyewear and clothing are gaining traction as well.

Competition is intensifying in the fitness wearables segment with the presence of top players such as Fitbit, Xiaomi, Apple, Garmin, Samsung and BBK.

Some notable players in the smart eyewear segment include Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL - Free Report) owned Google’s offering called Google Glass and Recon Jet from Recon Instruments.
