Qualcomm Launches 5G NR Spectrum Sharing Prototype System

Read MoreHide Full Article

Leading wireless chipset manufacturer Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM - Free Report) is leaving no stone unturned to strengthen its footprint in the field of communications and technology, especially when 5G is making inroads into the industry. Qualcomm’s subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., announced the launch of its first 5G New Radio (NR) spectrum sharing prototype system and trial platform.

The industry is already working on 5G NR to reap the maximum benefits out of the broad range of spectrum – licensed, unlicensed and shared. The main purpose of Qualcomm Technologies' prototype system is to explore the benefits of 5G spectrum. The spectrum helps in integrating higher levels of mobile broadband with shared spectrum to offer fiber-like experiences and allow 5G deployments for enterprise and industrial Internet of things (IoT) purposes.

This new system will be utilized for technology development in 2017, followed by field trials.

5G NR Spectrum Sharing Prototype

The 5G NR spectrum prototype is based on Qualcomm Technologies' sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G NR end-to-end prototypes which include both base station and user equipment (UE). Hence, this new spectrum prototype is an add-on to Qualcomm’s existing 5G NR sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave prototype systems. Qualcomm Technologies’ spectrum sharing test bed is being expanded to support Listen-Before-Talk (LBT) technology, wideband waveforms with low latency and enhancements in the radio and network protocols.

The 5G NR spectrum enables new spectrum sharing options. This technology will not only benefit operators with licensed spectrum but will also open up scope for 5G NR utilization for those without licensed spectrum – cable operators, enterprise or IoT verticals.

5G spectrum sharing enables expansion, enhancement and upgrade of the spectrum sharing technologies introduced in LTE. These include License Assisted Access (LAA) to aggregate across spectrum types, LTE Wi-Fi Aggregation (LWA) to be combined across technologies and CBRS/License Shared Access (LSA) to share spectrum with occupants.

Qualcomm’s 5G Developments

In Oct 2016, Qualcomm Technologies announced the launch of the world’s first 5G modem Snapdragon X50 and gigabit modem Snapdragon X16 LTE. The announcement was made at the company’s 4G/5G Summit held in Hong Kong.

In Sep 2016, Qualcomm along with other mobile telecommunication companies – Ericsson (ERIC - Free Report) , Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd, Intel Corporation (INTC - Free Report) and Nokia Corporation (NOK - Free Report) -- announced a 5G Automotive partnership with German car manufacturers Audi, BMW and Daimler. The main purpose behind this alliance is to dealwith society's connected mobility and road safety needs byupgrading the infrastructure required forconnected automated driving, ubiquitous access to services and integration into smart cities, and intelligent transportation, with the help of LTE and 5G advancements.
