Citrix (CTXS) Buys Application Layering Inventor Unidesk

Citrix Systems recently announced that it has acquired Unidesk. Investors should note that the acquiree was the inventor of the famous Windows application packaging and management technology called layering. This technology has gained immense popularity as the best method to separate apps from the underlying operating system. This allows the app to be managed and delivered to any device from an end user computing solution. Most importantly, Unidesk’s product has an edge in the field of application compatibility, which is integral in deriving value from any layering solution.

Citrix will be adding the Unidesk technology to its XenApp and XenDesktop products. This is expected to significantly simplify the secure deployment and management of apps and desktops.

Benefit of the Technology

Unidesk provided full-stack layering technology that improves compatibility as it layers the whole Window workspace as modular virtual disks along with the Windows operating system itself (OS layer), and apps (app layers). It also provided a writable persistent layer that captures features like the whole user settings, apps, and data.

Customers of Citrix will be able to use the path breaking technology of Unidesk 4.0. The company believes that the combination with Unidesk will promote growth and development in the field. The company will be selling Unidesk as a separate product to users of VMware Horizon and Microsoft virtual desktop deployment.
