Given Facebook, Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal goal of meeting people from every state in the U.S., it comes as no surprise that the tech maven spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day doing community service in Dallas.
Zuckerberg was in Dallas to testify for the lawsuit that accused Facebook of purchasing Oculus, the virtual reality headset maker, knowing that the technology is stolen.
Facebook has very high penetration among netizens and it continues to grow globally. Facebook helps users exchange messages, post pictures, play social games, listen to music, interact and is also a platform for news and idea sharing.
However, during the Presidential elections in 2016, tech giants like Facebook and Twitter were accused of disseminating fake news resulting in surprising election results. Facebook representatives have been guarded in their responses regarding the allegations, confirming initiatives to check the spread of false news.
Rising concerns have also come from Germany, as the Social Democrat Party has threatened to fine Facebook €500,000 for each post containing any hoax content. This has been in the wake of the allegations that fake news and rumors led to Trump’s victory.
Media reports further add that German intelligence agencies have been on their toes as there are chances that fake news can possibly alter election results. Reportedly, Buzzfeed has found that there are several fake reports about Angela Merkel, who is campaigning for the fourth term as the chancellor, on Facebook. As a result, “pressure” is building up on Facebook to curb fake news on its platform.
The company has plans to update its platform and introduce third party fact checkers in Germany to verify the authenticity of the posted content.
As far as Zuckerberg’s resolution to meet people from all over the country and have discussions with university students is concerned, it can be seen as an effort to understand the general mindset of the users and their outlook. This can also be viewed as his attempt to address the rising public image issues of the company. Zuckerberg also posted that “My work is about connecting the world and giving everyone a voice”.
Zuckerberg also reportedly met up with the Dallas Police Department. As per his post, “We had a good discussion about how social media is changing law enforcement. Facebook and technologies like live video create new ways to build accountability and trust, but they also create new challenges for police that didn’t exist before”.
At present, Facebook has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). In the past one year, Facebook’s shares are up 34.23%, compared with the Zacks Internet Services industry’s increase of 15.29%.
