Toyota Recalls Tundra Trucks to Replace Resin Bumper Parts

Read MoreHide Full Article

Toyota Motor Corporation (TM - Free Report) announced the recall of 79,000 Tundra pickup trucks of model years 2016 and 2017. Per the company, the rear bumpers of these trucks have steps and reinforcement brackets made of resin. This makes the step susceptible to damage when the truck is in reverse gear and hits something. It can also break if a person steps on it.

To fix this issue, Toyota dealers will replace the resin reinforcement brackets with steel ones. The company will start sending notice for the recall from the middle of next month. The recall will cover trucks in the U.S., Canada and Central America.

Safety recalls and related costs have become a major issue for most automakers. Earlier this month, Toyota announced the recall of 543,000 additional vehicles in the U.S. to replace defective front passenger seat airbag inflators made by Japanese supplier Takata Corp. These airbags had been declared defective by Takata recently.

The recall covers models including the 2008-2009 Scion xB, 2009 and 2012 Corolla and Corolla Matrix, 2007-2009 and 2012 Toyota Yaris, 2012 4Runner and Sienna and some variants of Lexus made during 2006-2012.

Massive recalls are being announced by all automakers, including as Ford Motor Co. (F - Free Report) , General Motors Co. (GM - Free Report) and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (HMC - Free Report) , to replace defective Takata airbag inflators that can explode in a crash, sending metal shrapnel into the passenger compartments. As a result of the defect, 16 people have been killed and nearly 180 have been injured globally. Over 100 million vehicles made by 17 automakers have been affected by the problem.
