Twitter (TWTR) Suspends Thousands of Terrorist Accounts

Twitter Inc. has taken a strong step to counter terrorism by flagging accounts linked with terrorism on its platform. According to Twitter’s latest bi-annual transparency report, the company has banned 636,248 accounts on grounds of violent extremism between Aug 2015 and Dec 2016.

The company announced that out of the 636,248 accounts suspended so far, 376,890 accounts linked with terrorism are pulled down between Jul 2016 and Dec 2016. Consequently, this move raised the daily suspension rate by 80% compared with the last year.

Moreover, 74% of these accounts were identified by the internal spam fighting tools of the company. One-third of the blocked accounts were automatically detected by these spam fighting tools as there is no specific algorithm to detect the terrorist related accounts.

Twitter’s proactive stance in eliminating terrorist activities on its platform will surely boost its brand value, which will attract advertisers eventually driving up top-line growth.

We note that the company has been disappointing investors for a while now, missing revenue expectations and generating poor user growth. At 319 million users, Twitter falls way behind other social media services like Facebook and Instagram. The company reported an increase of just 2 million new users in the fourth quarter results.

We note that Twitter has underperformed the Zacks Internet Software industry on a year-to-date basis. While the stock clocked a negative return of 8%, the industry witnessed an increase of 6%.


Tracking Terrorism: Twitter’s Initiatives

Apart from eliminating terrorism related accounts, the company has joined hands with Alphabet (GOOGL - Free Report) , Microsoft (MSFT - Free Report) and Facebook to combat violent extremism online. All these companies are in the process of creating a joint database of digital “fingerprints.”

The database named hashes will contain images and videos of terrorists retrieved from respective websites. This information will be shared among the companies and aid implement policies in taking down the accounts.

In the last six months of 2016, Twitter has witnessed an increase of 7% in requests from governments of various countries about information related to the flagged accounts.
