Samsung Unveils Galaxy S8 & S8+, to Hit Stores On April 21

Yesterday, South Korean giant, Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest smart phones, Galaxy S8 and S8+, at the “Unpacked” event held in New York. The phones will be available from Apr 21, 2017. Pre-orders will begin on Mar 30, 2017.

Samsung’s S8 has initially received positive reviews. Per media reports, the phones have very large display screens (S8 has 5.8 inch while S8+ has 6.2 inch display) as the borders are considerably reduced due to the absence of the home button. Justin Denison, the vice president of product strategy of Samsung Electronics America, was quoted saying S8 “will fundamentally change the way you use your phone by giving you more screen.”

In fact, the home button has been moved to the bottom of the screen and is eerily similar to Apple’s (AAPL - Free Report) Force Touch.  Apart from the Force Touch, Samsung phones have a Siri-like voice assistant called Bixby which debuts with the S8 phones and will also be available on other Samsung devices, gradually.  Earlier, Samsung was quoted saying "Bixby is at the heart of our software and services evolution as a company."

The new Galaxy phones have a fingerprint reader located at the back and there is a new facial recognition/ Iris screening feature for unlocking. Denison has labeled this feature as “the most secure form of biometric security we’ve ever created.”

However, it is Dex that has been touted as S8’s biggest improvement. Reportedly, this new feature enables users to connect peripherals like mouse, keyboard and monitor with the smart phone and use the phone like a desktop. More importantly, to avoid any issues with the battery, Samsung has implemented an eight point safety check.

The company needs these new phones to be a hit in order to reverse its misfortunes.Last year, Samsung found itself in troubled waters after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.  The company had to make an embarrassing recall of its highly anticipated product following a battery issue that caused phones to explode while charging. Moreover, the arrest of the company chief, Jay Y. Lee, also created more wariness toward the brand.

The news coincided with Apple’s launch of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Samsung’s woes are believed to have helped Apple’s cause to an extent, as sales of the latter’s latest edition phone recorded a better-than-expected performance. In fact, as per Gartner, in the fourth quarter of 2016, Apple’s smart phone unit sales outpaced that of Samsung for the first time in eight quarters, making it the highest smart phone seller.

Apple and Samsung are the biggest players in the smart phone space.  This year is equally important for Apple as it gears up to launch iPhone 8. The phone is specially being launched to mark the tenth anniversary of the first iPhone, and is rumored to have features like a glass body, a dual curved edge-to-edge OLED display with a built-in Touch ID sensor, wireless charging and higher storage options. In short, Apple is expected to make a huge technological advancement with this new edition.

Per media reports, iPhone 8 will be the first iPhone to support AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) display. Also, the phone will have a big display screen at 5.8 inches. Media reports further add that the display will have a 2K set up and display ratio could be more than 2:1. OLED display will also boost the phone’s battery life. The leap in display technology, among other innovations, has prompted analysts to label iPhone 8 as a “super cycle”.

However, for Apple, it is the pricing of the phones that is highly concerning. iPhone 8 could  be priced north of $1000. Many analysts argue that the existing iPhone 7 and 7 Plus editions, with 256GB storage, carry price tags of $849 and $969, respectively. So a price tag of $1000 should not be considered unreasonable for a fully redesigned limited edition OLED iPhone 8.

Per media reports, Verizon will sell the Galaxy S8 for $720 and S8+ for $840 while T-Mobile will be offering the Galaxy S8 for $750 and $850, respectively.

However, both Samsung and Apple need to be wary of the increasing competition from cheaper handset makers like Oppo, OnePlus and Huawei as well as Google’s Pixel phone.
