JetBlue (JBLU) Beats on Q1 Earnings

JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU - Free Report) is a low-cost carrier which is based in Long Island City, NY. The carrier, founded in 1998, operates primarily on point-to-point routes. It operates an average of 800 daily flights and carries more than 30 million customers annually to multiple destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America.

The company has a decent track record with respect to earnings, having outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three of the last four quarters. The average earnings beat is 4.55%.

We have highlighted some of the key stats from this just-revealed announcement below:

Earnings: JetBlue’s earnings (excluding special items) of 25 cents per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 24 cents. Earnings declined substantially from the year ago figure due to higher costs.

Revenue: Operating revenues came in at $1,604 million, short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1,617.8 million. Revenues declined 0.8% from the year-ago figure. Passenger revenues, which accounted for bulk of the top line, declined 1.8% in the first quarter of 2017. Other revenues increased 10.4%. Operating revenue per available seat mile (RASM) declined 4.8%.

Key Stats to Note: For the second quarter of 2017, the carrier expects capacity to increase in the band of 4% and 6%. For the full-year 2017 the metric is still expected to increase in the range of 5.5% to 7.5%. Consolidated operating cost per available seat mile, excluding fuel, is expected to grow in the band of 4.5% to 6.5% in the second quarter of 2017. For the full-year 2017 the metric is still expected to grow in the range of 1.5% to 3.5%. RASM is projected to increase in the range of 3% and 6% on a year-over-year basis.

Stock Price: The earnings beat pleased the investors. Shares of the company were up in pre-market trading at the time of writing.
