Last November, in bright, yellow, Minion-like vending machines—dubbed “Snapbots”—Snap Inc. (SNAP - Free Report) debuted Spectacles, the social networking company’s $130 sunglasses with a built-in camera that connects to your smartphone to take and send snaps.
Spectacles can record 10, 20, or 30 second video clips, and will even record in HD. The device connects over Wi-Fi in order to import your snaps, send them on Snapchat, or export the video clips to another app or to your smartphone’s camera roll. On average, Spectacles can take up to 100 snaps on one charge
The hardware then expanded from being sold in vending machines to being sold through direct web orders, and Snap even opened a pop-up shop in New York City at the height of Spectacles’ popularity. Initially, the smart sunglasses were pretty hard to get, and Snap limited customers to six Spectacles purchases per household when ordering online.
But today, Snapchat fans can now purchase Spectacles on Amazon.com (AMZN - Free Report) . All three colors (black, coral, and teal) are available, and are even eligible for next day Prime delivery (through Snap, there’s an estimated delivery of 5-10 business days). Spectacles will be sold directly by Snap and fulfilled by Amazon.
Selling through Amazon could help Snap revive the Spectacles hype, as it has considerably died down since its launch. When the company filed for its IPO earlier this year, it revealed that it wanted to “significantly broaden the distribution of Spectacles.” No doubt this move will allow the device to reach a much bigger audience and customer base.
