Read MoreHide Full Article

United Continental Holdings, Inc. (UAL - Free Report) reported traffic numbers for October. Traffic, measured in revenue passenger miles (RPMs), was 18.05 billion, up 1.7% from the year-ago figure.

On a year-over-year basis, consolidated capacity (or available seat miles/ASMs) climbed 3.4% to 22.26 billion. However, load factor (percentage of seats occupied by passengers) decreased 130 basis points (bps) to 81.1% as capacity expansion outpaced traffic growth.

At the end of the first 10 months of 2017, the carrier registered a 2.6% rise in RPMs to 181.16 billion while ASMs increased 3.3% to 219.62 billion, both on a year-over-year basis. Load factor contracted 50 bps to 82.5% as capacity growth exceeded traffic expansion.

The company posted an on-time performance of 74% and a completion factor of 99.7% for October.

The company’s prediction for fourth-quarter 2017 consolidated passenger unit revenues remains unchanged at a decline of 1-3%.

The carrier recently reported third-quarter earnings numbers. Despite recent successive hurricanes, United Continental reported better-than-expected earnings and revenues in the quarter. The bottom line was however, 28.6% lower than the year-ago figure due to higher costs. The top line too declined marginally on a year-over-year basis.

Other key airline players like JetBlue Airways (JBLU - Free Report) and Hawaiian Holdings (HA - Free Report) have also released third-quarter financial numbers. While JetBlue surpassed both earnings and revenues in the quarter, Hawaiian Holdings reported mixed results. Hawaiian Holdings reported better-than-expected earnings but lower-than-expected revenues.
