Gilead Sciences (GILD) Q2 Earnings and Revenues Surpass Estimates

Gilead Sciences (GILD - Free Report) just came out with quarterly earnings of $1.91 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.55 per share. This compares to earnings of $2.56 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 23.23%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this HIV and hepatitis C drugmaker would post earnings of $1.66 per share when it actually produced earnings of $1.48, delivering a surprise of -10.84%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates three times.

Gilead, which belongs to the Zacks Medical - Biomedical and Genetics industry, posted revenues of $5.65 billion for the quarter ended June 2018, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 9.08%. Total product sales for the quarter were $5.5 billion. HIV product sales were $3.7 billion, while HCV product sales totaled $1.0 billion. HCV sales declined, primarily due to increased competition.

Gilead’s effective tax rate and non-GAAP effective tax rate in the second quarter of 2018 were 12.8% and 13.4% compared to 24.3% and 22.8% in the first quarter of 2018.

Management reiterated its full-year net product sales guidance. The company raised its diluted, adjusted EPS guidance range to $1.50 - $1.60 per share from the previously-announced $1.41 - $1.51 per share.

Through 4:11 pm EST, shares of Gilead were down 1.4% to $77.80 in after-hours trading.

The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

Gilead shares have added about 8.4% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 5.5%.
