Read MoreHide Full Article

Facebook and Spain’s elite soccer division, La Liga, recently inked a deal to air the upcoming three seasons of the tournament in the Indian sub-continent for no additional cost.

Per La Liga, a total of 380 league matches, which begin this Friday, will be available for free on the social media platform in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The elite soccer division is betting big on India. The country has overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest Facebook audience with a total of 241 million active users as of Jul 13. Additionally, La Liga made early investments by opening its offices in India in September 2016.

Facebook has displaced Sony to become the free-to-air rights holder in the region. Notably, the split in broadcast fee between Facebook and La Liga was not disclosed. Per Reuters, the broadcast fee for Sony was $32 million from 2014 to 2018.

Notably, Facebook’s director of Global Live Sports, Peter Hutton, noted that initial game content will be advertisement free although later versions could include advertisements.

Live Streaming Gaining Traction

Streaming live sports is one of the most lucrative opportunities for the social media giant as it helps to boost engagement levels and brings more advertising dollars.

Earlier this year, Facebook landed the live broadcast rights for the Premier League — the England based soccer league — in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, reportedly from 2019 to 2022.

Additionally, Facebook has signed a deal with Major League Baseball (MLB) to stream 25 games on Watch this season. Facebook, by focusing on bringing highly popular sports tournament on the platform, is trying to lure users and aiming at “time well spent” on the platform.

Notably, other social media sites are scrambling to get more and more sports-oriented live streaming on their platform.

Twitter announced more than 30 new and renewed deals for live and original programming. Notably, sports leagues including MLB and Major League Soccer are also included in the deal.

Additionally, Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) also announced a groundbreaking deal for the exclusive rights to broadcast a small but important set of Premier League matches in the UK.

Moreover, deals like this are hugely important in an entertainment age being shaped by the likes of Netflix and Hulu.

Live sports and live video will help Facebook further monetize and add to its 2.23 billion monthly active users. Moreover, Facebook’s efforts to incorporate more and more video-oriented content to bring in more ad dollars bode well for the company.

However, the company’s heavy spending in areas like safety & security, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR), marketing, and content acquisition is expected to hurt profits.

Facebook currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
