General Dynamics Wins $23M Radio Control Transceivers Deal

Read MoreHide Full Article

General Dynamics Corp.’s (GD - Free Report) Mission Systems business unit recently secured a $23.2-million contract for the air traffic control radio replacement. The contract was awarded by Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Tinker Air Force Base, OK.

Details of the Deal

Per the terms of the deal, Mission Systems Unit will provide CM-300/350 transceivers and optional remote control units as a function replacement for the legacy GRC 171/211 ATC radio backups. Work related to the deal will be performed in Scottsdale, AZ and is expected to be effective Aug 1, 2018 through Jul 31, 2023.

A Brief Note on CM-300/350 Air Traffic Control Radios

The CM-300/350 Series Version 2 air traffic control radios are the latest additions to the General Dynamics family of Air Traffic Control (ATC) radios. Based on the FAA NEXCOM Segment 2 radio requirements along with the demanding volume of air traffic, these rack mounted transmitters and receiver systems are specifically designed to meet the mission requirements of air traffic control centers, commercial airports, military air stations and range installations.

What’s Favoring General Dynamics?

Notably, General Dynamics' Mission Systems segment manufactures the air traffic control radios along with ISR systems, communications and sensors. With a 50-year legacy in radio frequency communications and networks, the segment offers a range of radio products and systems for military, government and commercial customers as well as long-term evolution (LTE) broadband communications networks for first responders. Impressively, the company’s AN/USC-61 Digital Modular Radio (DMR) is the first software-defined radio to become a communications system standard for the U.S. military. Moreover, this unit delivers CM-300/350 V2 digital radios to the FAA, used by the air traffic control centers, commercial airports, military air stations and range installations for reliable ground-to-air communications.

Mission Systems registered $1.15 billion of sales in the second quarter of 2018, reflecting 9% year-over-year growth. We expect General Dynamics to witness similar strong results in this segment in the upcoming quarters as well, buoyed by strong demand for its sensor and communication programs, eventually leading to contract wins like the latest one. This, in turn, should expand the company’s profit margin.

Price Movement

General Dynamics’s stock lost 2.8% in the last year compared with its industry’s growth of 22.7%. The underperformance may have been caused by the intense competition that the company faces in the aerospace-defense space.

Will You Make a Fortune on the Shift to Electric Cars?

Here's another stock idea to consider. Much like petroleum 150 years ago, lithium power may soon shake the world, creating millionaires and reshaping geo-politics. Soon electric vehicles (EVs) may be cheaper than
gas guzzlers. Some are already reaching 265 miles on a single charge.

With battery prices plummeting and charging stations set to multiply, one company stands out as the #1 stock to buy according to Zacks research.

It's not the one you think.
