Gamescom is an annual video game trade fair which occurs in Cologne, Germany. It’s the second-largest gaming event behind only the Asia Game Show, and it pulls several hundred thousand visitors as exhibitors—from publishers like Activision and Electronic Arts (EA - Free Report) to console makers such as Microsoft (MSFT - Free Report) and Sony —show off new tech and announce release dates.

The 2018 edition of Gamescom officially started today, but Nvidia (NVDA - Free Report) attempted to steal the show with a pre-event livestream yesterday, at which the GPU maker revealed a highly-anticipated line of graphics processors geared toward high-end gamers.

Nvidia had already announced its new Turing architecture, the latest in its industry-leading family of graphics technology, earlier this month, and with that, it unveiled the first products to feature the new tech: three GPUs in the Quadro line, which is designed for professional applications.

But Gamescom is about gaming, so gamers, analysts, and investors alike were excited about Nvidia potentially revealing a Turing-based line of gaming GPUs. Luckily, the Santa Clara, California-based firm delivered!

The key takeaway from Nvidia’s event yesterday was the reveal of its new Founders Edition RTX 2070, 2080, and 2080 Ti GPUs. The latter two of those cards are available for preorder right now, with shipments expected to begin on or around September 20.

These are top-of-the-line GPUs and will feature built-in support for Nvidia’s new real-time ray tracing technology. Ray tracing is a rendering and lighting technique designed to deliver photorealistic graphics. It provides incredibly high levels of visual realism, but pulling it off is incredibly complex on a computational level.

Ray tracing has been present in the movie industry for a number of years, as filmmakers can create lifelike images and scenes in pre-rendered, pre-determined sequences. But ray tracing has not—until now—made its way to gaming because, unlike movies, video game sequences are interactive and happen in real time.

Nvidia’s most impressive display of the ray tracing technology was its demo of the game Battlefield V, where it showed realistic with reflections from explosions accurately rendering on nearby objects like cars, tanks, and even soldiers in the first-person shooter environment.

Simply put, Nvidia wowed audiences at Gamescom 2018, and its new GPU reveal might end up being the biggest moment of the event. Why is it important for investors to recognize and understand this? Check out the show to hear Ryan’s explanation!
