Grab These 8 Stocks for Their Strong Numbers

With the dollar inching down in likely preparation for the Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell delivering his speech today and political uncertainty stemming from the conviction of the second of President Trump’s advisors for breaking campaign finance laws, bank fraud and tax evasion, things appear to be less than perfect for the market.

Trump losing face before the midterm elections may topple the cart for the Republicans and could lead to a number of consequences including the President’s resignation or his impeachment.

But the President appears oblivious for now, imposing tariffs on goods from partners like Canada, Mexico and Europe, and adversaries like China. Trump’s initial tariffs on Chinese goods valued at around $50 billion were exceeded by China, which imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods of around $52 billion. So now, he has increased tariffs on $107 billion worth of imports, and threatened tariffs on another $608 billion. China may be expected to retaliate, or even wait for the election outcome.

It’s fairly easy to see that technology and finance remain the hottest sectors for investment, followed by medical and then industrial, consumer discretionary and transportation. But how to tell which stocks have the strongest potential to outperform and are therefore the best investments? Everyone isn’t out to buy an Apple after all, or a Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etcetera.

So here, I’ve chosen some simple criteria that can help us choose from the huge number of stocks out there.

My first criterion is a Zacks Rank of #1. This makes sense to me because Rank #1 stocks have generated annualized returns of 25.7% over the last 30 years compared to the S&P 500 return of just 10.7%.

Second, I’ve preferred companies belonging in the top 100 Zacks industries. In case you haven’t noticed, even average stocks in strong industries tend to do better than good stocks in weaker ones. What’s more, among the 250+ Zacks classified industries, the top half beat the bottom half by a factor of more than 2 to 1 in the last 10 years.

Third, an EPS surprise of more than 50% in the last quarter seems like good performance to me, especially if it comes with a 50%+ increase in estimates for the current quarter and current fiscal year.

I’ve always believed that numbers speak, so here are a bunch of stocks with such numbers-
