Social Media Platform – Key Catalyst

It’s no surprise that the customer base for both gaming companies and social media platforms largely comprises teenagers. This is the reason why gaming and social media companies have been inking deals to increase engagement levels and branding to gain share from competitors.

Activision is maintaining its trend of inking deals to boost its presence by bringing content closer to consumers.

Per management, Overwatch League has been the most talked about game on Twitter and Activision’s partnership with the social media company comes at a right time to boost further user participation, which will eventually translate to a stronger user base.

Moreover, the company also inked a multiyear deal with Disney (DIS - Free Report) to air the Overwatch e-sports league on ESPN prime time, Disney XD, and various Disney-owned streaming services.

We believe that the growing popularity of Overwatch League coupled with these partnerships will help Activision increase its audience and the time spent by them on the platform, thereby driving in-game revenues.

Notably, in-game net bookings (62.5% of total revenues) came in at $1 billion in the last reported quarter. The company has been successful in monetizing its in-game content.

Competition Intensifying

However, Activision’s competitors Electronic Arts (EA - Free Report) and Take-Two Interactive have also boosted their partnerships in the e-sports space.

Electronic Arts and ESPN have several deals for FIFA 17 Ultimate and Madden NFL 18. Moreover, Take-Two and the NBA’s inaugural NBA 2K League season are currently streaming on Amazon’s Twitch.

In such a scenario, we believe the growing popularity of Overwatch along with increasing viewership, thanks to the company’s partnerships, will provide a competitive edge to Activision.
