Sports Retail Roundup: Foot Locker, Dick's & Lululemon

Read MoreHide Full Article

Welcome to the latest episode of the Full-Court Finance podcast from Zacks Investment Research where Associate Stock Strategist Ben Rains dives into Foot Locker’s (FL - Free Report) second-quarter financial results. The episode then shifts to what investors should expect from Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS - Free Report) and Lululemon (LULU - Free Report) later this week.

Foot Locker saw its sales jump 4.8% to reach $1.78 billion, which topped our estimate. The sports retailer also posted better-than-excepted adjusted earnings of $0.75 per share. But shares of Foot Locker sunk as much as 12% last Friday following its earnings release. The dip marked the firm’s worst day in the last year.

Foot Locker’s performance scared investors for different reasons, but its selloff came amid a strong second quarter for retailers, from Target (TGT - Free Report) to Walmart (WMT - Free Report) . Plus, Foot Locker’s Q2 results helped send shares of Dick’s down as well.

Pressure will be on Dick’s when it reports its Q2 financial results on Wednesday for numerous reasons. First, the sports footwear and apparel giants that it has relied on for years—Nike (NKE - Free Report) , Adidas (ADDYY - Free Report) , and Under Armour (UAA - Free Report) —have all pushed deeper into their own e-commerce businesses as they transition to more direct-to-consumers sales and away from wholesale in the Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) age.

Shares of Dick’s have also been up big over the last year, which might mean that the company will have to really impress investors in order to keep up its strong momentum. Meanwhile, Lululemon is another sports retailer that is set to report what could prove to be pivotal quarterly earnings results after the bell on Thursday.

LULU stock has skyrocketed over 130% in the last 52 weeks on the back of strong growth and the overall strength of the athleisure industry. Lululemon’s e-commerce sales will remain in focus this week, as will its ability to expand in Europe and Asia as it faces increased competition from not only Nike and Adidas, but also from direct competitors such as Outdoor Voices and Gap’s (GPS - Free Report) Athleta.
