Read MoreHide Full Article

In a bid to deliver an ultra-portable laptop experience, Intel (INTC - Free Report) has introduced new 8th Gen Intel Core processors. The company expanded its U-series (previously named Whiskey Lake) and Y-series (named Amber Lake earlier) with new CPUs.

The U-series now comprises new i3-8145U, i5-8265U and i7-8565U processors. The company added m3-8100Y, i7-8500 and i5-8200Y among others to its Y-series CPUs.

The new CPUs for the first time will enable connectivity in light and thin 2 in 1s laptops. Further, the new processors will deliver enhanced mobile performance and improved battery life.

Robust Features

New U-series CPUs

The new U-series CPUs comprise up to eight threads and four cores apt for 2 in 1s and mainstream laptops. The new CPUs offer superior performance in a 15-watt envelope.

With a  view to up the ante, the new U-series feature integrated Gigabit Wi-Fi connectivity. When combined with Intel’s LTE modem and Wireless-AC routers, users can avail faster connectivity, consequently enhancing downloading, streaming and sharing experience.

The integrated Gigabit Wi-Fi enables the system to offer almost 12X faster connectivity. Further, the laptops and 2 in 1s are enabled to function for almost 16 hours on a single charge. The robust power-saving systems can extend battery life to up to 19 hours.

With the new quad-core audio DSP, the laptops with new U-series CPUs will be able to identify voice commands for Microsoft’s (MSFT - Free Report) Cortana and Amazon’s (AMZN - Free Report) Alexa and other virtual assistants.

Netflix (NFLX - Free Report) , Amazon Prime Video and iQiyi users, among others, will benefit from faster downloading and enhanced 4K UHD video streaming experience.

The devices featuring the new CPUs are enabled to support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision HDR immersive audio to enhance entertainment experience.

Users can download videos in less than a minute as well as edit, create and share 4K/360 videos by 6.5-times faster speed. The gamers can benefit from augmented streaming experience.

New Y-Series CPUs

The latest Y-series CPUs comprise up to two cores and offer superior performance in a 5-watt envelope. The processors also feature faster LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity. When combined with Intel’s Gigabit LTE modems, the users can boost connectivity with eSIM and Modern Standby support.

With enhanced touch and stylus interface the creative minds will be able to sketch, paint and shade meticulously. The ultra-sleek, light and thin designs (lower than 7 millimeters in thickness and weighing less than 1 pound) make the system apt for multipurpose use, whether at home, office or on-the-go.

Targeting Laptop Market: Key Catalyst

The new CPUs are powered with robust performance features, enhancing productivity of mainstream laptops.

Per a Market Research Future report, global 2 in 1 laptop market is envisioned to witness a CAGR of 20% from 2017 to reach approximately $3.4 billion by 2023.

The emergence of high-end cloud computing, thinner laptops, and demand for fast processing is expected to bode well for the newly introduced CPUs.

Bottom Line

We believe the new CPUs will expand the company’s customer base going ahead, consequently, bolstering its Client Computing Group (“CCG”) revenues.

Intel’s dominance in CPU market is anticipated to improve with the new processors for sleek laptops. The new CPUs are likely to pave the way for ultra-thin PCs.

However, stiff competition from AMD remains a concern.
