Read MoreHide Full Article

Activision recently announced the international release of Destiny 2: Forsaken’s third expansion pack on Sony’s PlayStation4 (PS4), Microsoft’s (MSFT - Free Report) Xbox One X and PCs. The game is available at a retail price of $39.99.

Destiny’s first ever hybrid 4v4 game mode, Gambit, combines both player versus player (PvP) and player versus environment (PvE) modes.

This unique game mode is a relatively new concept incorporated by Bungie, one of the developers of the game, to provide a differentiated experience.

Additionally, the game also comprises two new destinations, a new endgame experience along with weapons, armors and shotguns that make considerable difference to the users’ gaming experience.

Notably, Activision’s effort to cash in on Destiny, one of its major revenue drivers, is a positive.

Destiny 2 – Key Growth Driver

Destiny 2, the second-highest selling console game in North America in 2017, contributed to Activision’s top line growth in the last reported quarter as well.

Notably, Activision’s publishing revenues increased 6.9% year over year to $338 million, primarily on the back of well-known franchises like Call of Duty (COD) and Destiny.

Moreover, the company earned $1 billion in in-game net bookings in the quarter driven by Call of Duty: WWII, Black Ops 3 and Destiny 2. Further, in-game revenues (62.5% of total revenues) were a record $2 billion in the first half of 2018.

COD Remains Key Catalyst

Activision generates over 70% of revenues from its popular franchises.

Among them, COD is one of the biggest growth drivers and the company is leaving no stone unturned to bring in new features and games to the COD franchise.

Notably, Activision recently announced the release of Call of Duty: World War II’s fourth expansion pack, Shadow War. Moreover, the company is all geared up for the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Competition Remains

However, Activision’s nearest competitor Electronic Arts (EA - Free Report) is having its best year by far, with significant wins at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018.

EA’s Anthem won the best PC game and best action game award. Additionally, FIFA 19 won the best sports award. Moreover, one of its popular games, Battlefield V won the best online multiplayer award, which directly competes with Activision’s COD and Epic game’s Fortnite.

Moreover, Fortnite, another popular game, won the best ongoing game award.

Nevertheless, this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock with its new game modes and exciting content is expected to gain competitive edge over the likes of EA, Take Two (TTWO - Free Report) and Fortnite going forward.
