Will E-Commerce Drive Retail Sales This Holiday Season?

U.S. consumers spent $18.1 billion online in the first 12 days of November, per a recent report from Adobe Analytics. Earlier this month, Adobe had predicted that online sales would touch $124 billion this holiday season.

Understandably, e-commerce has been driving holiday sales for the last few years, with an increasing number of consumers preferring to shop online.  This has seen a large number of retailers ramping up their online offerings this holiday season.

E-Commerce to Drive Holiday Retail Sales

Per Adobe Analytics, U.S. consumers spent $18.1 billion in the first 12 days of November. This reflects an increase of 16.6% year over year. In the first 12 days of November, average order value per customer was $134, up 2% year over year.

Interestingly, in the first nine days of November, e-commerce sales grew a meager 13.3% year over year. However, between Nov 10 and Nov 12, online sales witnessed a solid jump of 25.7% year over year. The robust online sales in the last three days can be attributed to a surge in spending over Veterans Day and Singles Day weekend.

Earlier this month, Adobe had predicted that online retail sales would reach $124.1 billion this holiday season, increasing 14.8%. Thanksgiving sales are expected to surge 16.5% to $3.3 billion this holiday season.

Retailers Ramp Up Online Presence

An increasing number of Americans prefer shopping online, with the likes of Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN - Free Report) having changed the entire retail ballgame in the last few years. Undoubtedly, e-commerce companies are fast taking the game away from brick-and-mortar stores.

However, brick-and-mortar giants too are leaving no stone unturned to boost their online sales. Per Adobe, retailers with both online and physical presence are likely to witness 28% higher conversion online than the ones lacking a traditional storefront.

Amazon is planning to launch a new last-mile shipping service this holiday season. Reportedly, for the first time, Amazon is planning to hire thousands of full-time drivers to transport packages to shoppers from Amazon delivery outposts across the country. The e-commerce giant recently said that it would be offering free shipping for all shoppers this holiday season with no minimum purchase amount on hundreds of millions of items.

Target Corporation (TGT - Free Report) also plans to offer free two-day shipping without a minimum order this holiday season. Walmart, Inc. (WMT - Free Report) on the other hand has added more than 2,000 brands online and will offer free two-day shipping on orders over $35. Walmart had earlier said that it has significantly increased the range of toys both online and in its stores, and expanded its online selection by 40% ahead of the holiday season. eBay, Inc. (EBAY - Free Report) too has been constantly making efforts to boost its online sales. The company recently joined forces with leading service providers, namely Handy, Porch and InstallerNet, to offer installation services to its shoppers. On purchasing any item from eBay’s Marketplaces, shoppers will now have the facility to add an installation service from the most-appropriate provider, as part of the checkout process.

Undoubtedly, e-commerce is giving retail sales a boost with more people preferring to shop online. This is likely to help both retail and online sales grow this holiday season.
