Alphabet Introduces Accents for Google Assistant in U.S.

Read MoreHide Full Article

Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL - Free Report) recently enhanced its Google Assistant’s features by introducing Australian and British accent for the company’s U.S.-based users. DeepMind’s speech synthesis model WaveNet will be used to generate the additional accents.

In order to choose “British Racing Green” or “Sydney Harbour Green” accents, the user needs to access the Google Assistant Settings menu, choose the assistant tab and select a preferable accent.

Moreover, to lure customers, the company is working with John Legend, whose voice is expected to be part of Assistant by 2019. Customers can find him singing or answering their queries, amongst others.

However, release of additional accents has been overdue at Alphabet. Apple’s (AAPL - Free Report) Siri, Microsoft’s (MSFT - Free Report) Cortana and Amazon’s (AMZN - Free Report) Alexa already feature Australian and British accents.

Coming to the price performance, Alphabet’s shares have lost 2.6% on a year-to-date basis against the industry’s decline of 23.1%.

Bolstering Presence in the Virtual Assistant Space

Alphabet ventured into the home assistant space in 2016 with the launch of Google Home, which runs on Google’s voice assistant. Moreover, as voice is being seen as the next big thing in computer interaction, these products could help Google boost its revenues in the near term.

To bolster its presence in the virtual assistant space, the company launched Google Home Hub in October. The new device comes with a 7-inch display screen, along with other features available in the Home and Home Mini devices.

The company also rolled out Pixel 3 smartphone in the same month, with features including artificial intelligence (AI) backed smart camera and robust voice command via Google Assistant, which enables users to know the purpose of a call before receiving it. Such robust features are expected to strengthen the company’s customer base.

Furthermore, Alphabet has announced new and useful features for Google Assistant to enhance user experience while shopping during the holiday season.

Latest device launches and product enhancements are anticipated to bode well for the company in the near term and fortify its product portfolio as well.

Competition Rife

Per Gartner’s recent report, consumer spending on virtual personal assistant-enabled wireless speakers will reach $2.1 billion worldwide in 2020, up from $360 million in 2015.

Google Assistant faces stiff competition from the likes of Amazon’s Alexa. Amazon continues to innovate and add more features to Alexa-powered Echo devices which contribute to the company’s top line. Notably, Alexa is currently equipped with more than 25,000 skills and can connect to any stream of business.

Additionally, contrary to Google’s Home Hub, Amazon’s Echo Show 2 devices are equipped with a display screen that supports video chat and also displays answers for the questions asked.

In addition, Facebook has unveiled Portal and Portal+ smart speakers with smart display which supports video chat with smart lens feature and in-built Alexa voice assistant.
