Xilinx Platform to Run AI Driven ZF Automotive Control Unit

Read MoreHide Full Article

Xilinx, Inc. recently collaborated with driveline and chassis technology supplier — ZF Friedrichshafen AG (“ZF”) — to power the new ZF ProAI automotive control unit.

The new control unit, ZF ProAI, will run on the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ microprocessor system-on-chips (MPSoC) platform, which will overlook the aggregation, pre-processing and distribution of real-time data, and accelerate the artificial intelligence (AI) processing of the unit.

The collaboration of Xilinx and ZF reflects the growing adoption of the Zynq platform. ZF opted for the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC platform for the high scalability and flexibility it provides to the processing power.

Zynq: The Growth Factor

Xilinx is riding on the growing traction witnessed by its Zynq portfolio. In November last year, Zynq UltraScale+ family of MPSoC was deemed Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3, HFT1 capable, per IEC 61508 functional-safety specification of Exida Functional Safety Certification Authority.

This certification wasthe green signal for developers to use the MPSoC platform in AI-based safety-critical applications of up to SIL 3.

The Zynq portfolio, which includes the Zynq RFSoC platform, is assisting the company to counter intense competition from the likes of Intel (INTC - Free Report) . The company has started shipping the 16-nm RFSoC Silicon In-house family of product, which offers superior architectural solution to 5G wireless with integrated RF-class analog technology.

The company’s Zynq portfolio recorded solid top-line growth in second-quarter fiscal 2019.Revenues from the company’s Zynq products surged 70% year over year, driven by robust demand in automotive mostly advanced driver assist systems, industrial and communications markets. The platform contributed 18% of total revenues.

UltraScale+  Architechture

Xilinx’s UltraScale families feature multiple nodes from planar through FinFET technologies. The UltraScale+ architecture also includes the Ultrascale+ FPGAs, which has considerable demand among data-center operators for providing FPGA-as-a-Service (FaaS). This makes us optimistic about its prospects.

Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) was the first to use Xilinx chips and started offering FaaS last year. The company’s leadership position in China market with regard to FaaS expanded with Alibaba (BABA - Free Report) moving from beta to general access.

Xilinx currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
