NVIDIA Ups the Ante in Self-Driving but Hits a Roadblock

Read MoreHide Full Article

NVIDIA (NVDA - Free Report) faced criticism from Intel (INTC - Free Report) owned Mobileye after it introduced Safety Force Field (SFF), a policy to protect driverless vehicles from collisions, at GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2019.

At the event held last week, NVIDIA announced the addition of a planning and control layer to its NVIDIA DRIVE AV autonomous vehicle software suite to enhance safety and comfort of driving.

However, the company has been accused by Mobileye founder & CEO and Intel SVP Amnon Shashua of imitating the safety model of Mobileye’s autonomous cars. Per management, SFF is a “close replica” of Mobileye’s Responsibility Sensitive Safety (RSS) model unveiled in 2017.

Rivalry Heating Up

Intel had acquired autonomous vehicle technology provider, Mobileye, in 2017 to strengthen its position in the autonomous car technology market, dominated by the likes of NVIDIA and Qualcomm (QCOM - Free Report) .

In the last reported quarter, Mobileye’s revenues of $183 million were up approximately 43% on a year-over-year basis primarily driven by strength in its ADAS and autonomous driving platforms-based solutions.

Mobileye garnered eight new design wins from notable U.S. and global auto companies in the fourth quarter, taking the total to 28 new wins in fiscal 2018. Management noted that Mobileye accomplished 78 vehicle model launches.

Intel, in spite of being a late entrant in the autonomous driving industry, is turning heads with its recent developments in the field, thereby intensifying competition.

Will NVIDIA’s Growing Initiatives Aid?

NVIDIA is leaving no stone unturned to revive its fortunes. Having impressed investors with a stellar performance in the last couple of years, the company has been witnessing a downward trend since last October. This is due to a slowdown in its gaming segment which was fueled by the company’s miscalculation resulting in excess GPU inventory.

Notably, NVIDIA has been putting in a lot of effort to strengthen its position in several emerging industries. Apart from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deep learning, the company is working hard to establish itself in the autonomous car industry.

In the last reported quarter, automotive revenues recorded the highest year-over-year improvement of 23% to $163 million, compared with 15% and 12% growth witnessed by Professional Visualization and Datacenter, respectively, while Gaming revenues slipped 45%.

Growth in automotive revenues was driven by autonomous vehicle development deals and the growing adoption of AI-based smart cockpit infotainment solutions.

The launch of level two plus self-driving car computer DRIVE AutoPilot is a major breakthrough for the company. It expects this year to be important for robo-taxi pilots and initial level two design wins. Volvo, its first design win, is likely to begin production in early 2020.

At Customer Electronics Show (CES) 2019, NVIDIA extended its partnership with Mercedes-Benz, owned by Daimler AG , to build AI architecture for Mercedes-Benz cars.

At GTC, the company announced its partnership with Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development (TRI-AD) to develop, train and validate self-driving vehicles. It also announced the availability of DRIVE Constellation autonomous vehicle simulation platform and revealed TRI-AD to be the first customer of the platform.

Notably, the chip-maker is pulling out all the stops to become a leading provider of technology for autonomous vehicles. It is hogging the limelight with its initiatives in driverless vehicles and using AI technology to build autonomous vehicles.

These initiatives are likely to reinforce investor confidence in this Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) stock and hopefully lead to a recovery.
