ABB Ltd (ABB - Analyst Report) recently supplied 6 Resibloc dry-type transformers with 5,860 kilovolt amperes (kVA) in order to power the Daocheng-Yading airport in the Sichuan Province of China. This airport is located 4,411 meters above the sea level, which is 77 meters higher than the current record held by the Bamda airport, Tibet.

The Tibetan airport (before the Daocheng-Yading airport) was the world’s highest airport with an altitude of 4,334 meters, having the longest runway in the world.

The Resibloc dry-type transformers assembled at the ABB’s facility in Shanghai are specifically designed to resist challenging weather and environment given the airport’s high altitude. In addition, about 60,000 such transformers manufactured by ABB are currently operational across the globe.

The reason for the huge success of these transformers is that they are safe, dependable, cost efficient and eco-friendly. The transformers are made of fiber rovings, which enables them to resist extreme weather conditions with temperatures falling to as low as -60ºC or rising to as high as 50ºC. Further, they are also explosion resistant.

The Daocheng-Yading regional airport will facilitate easier travel between the western cities of China, relieving passengers from a long rugged road travel. The new airport will have a capacity to handle 500,000 passengers.

These dry-type transformers are used in applications where the risk of fire for people and the environment need to be eliminated. Additionally, they are designed in a manner that can match the most stringent electrical parameters, have the ability to cope with toughest weather conditions and require minimal maintenance.

All these factors make them a preferred option for sectors like oil and gas, marine, mining and steel, the paper and chemical industries, in commercial and high-rise buildings as well as in power generation and distribution.
