Information technology and business process services firm, CGI Group Inc. (GIB - Snapshot Report), recently received a contract worth $38.75 million from Calif. Per the four year contract, CGI Group will be required to implement a new centralized statewide voter registration database system named VoteCal.

Presently, the state uses a statewide voter registration database system (CalVoter), wherein the information about the new and existing voters is maintained separately. The CalVoter system saves a copy of each county voter’s registration data and updates the data whenever necessary.

CGI plans to replace the existing system with VoteCal, a modern technical software having added features to ease the process for voters. After being implemented, VoteCal will be a single point source for all official voter registration information which is also expected to improve the efficiency of the voter registration process. VoteCal will be connected to the systems of multiple state agencies and the 58 county election offices.

VoteCal will feature a new public website within its system to facilitate the common man to get himself registered to vote, thus making the system easier and streamlined for voters. Therefore, voters can now access this website to register online, update their information whenever required and also verify their registration details. In addition, the website will also enable the voters to check for interim ballot and vote-by-mail ballot status, which will improve the ability of the general public to register to vote, thereby making it easier for voters to access or update their voter registration information. Therefore, implementation of VoteCal will not only improve the access to vote but will also provide a platform where voters’ laws and voters’ registration process can be worked out uniformly across states.

The new software is believed to help the state of Calif address the objective of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), which requires all the states to have a centralized voter registration system.

Prior to this, CGI has been supporting the Californian government’s technology modernization projects through its extensive information system. CGI currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Other stocks worth mentioning within the sector are CSG Systems International Inc. (CSGS - Snapshot Report), Innodata Inc. (INOD - Snapshot Report) and Lionbridge Technologies Inc. (LIOX - Snapshot Report). Each of the above mentioned stocks carries a Zacks Rank #1(Strong Buy).
