Shares of Alcatel-Lucent, S.A. rose 4% up on Tuesday after the company announced its successful completion of a six-month trial of the 4G LTE network in Las Vegas. Alcatel Lucent conducted this public safety network trial in collaboration with Las Vegas Metro Police Department, the Nevada Department of Transportation and other first responders.
The spectrum used for the trial was allocated to First Responders Network Authority (FirstNet), an independent authority set up by the federal government. FirstNet aims to facilitate the development of interoperable broadband network across the country for public safety organizations.
The trial used FirstNet’s 700 MHz spectrum, and provided critical insights to enable rolling out of the technology across the nation. This trial revealed the pros and cons of mobile broadband and offered an outlook for further development.
A high-speed network can help in emergency situations like the attacks of 9/11 by letting public safety organizations engage in real-time tracking of important metrics. This could ensure a timely response from these organizations.
The trial was a part of the Ultra-Broadband network design providing the participants with real-time tracking and collaborating videos and vehicles. It also allotted secured remote office applications, WiFi and virtual private networks (VPN). Its positive results were presented to the Las Vegas area Law Enforcement Agencies this October.
This initiative is another of Alcatel-Lucent’s strategy to reposition itself as one of the leading providers of IP Networking and Ultra-Broadband Access, as per its Shift Plan.
Other technologies from the Alcatel-Lucent's ‘ngConnect’ Program that participated in the trial include Axis Communications, CalAmp Fusion broadband multi-network LTE/FirstNet ready router, Cassidian Communications Broadband Vehicle Router 700, LiveViewGPS Live Trac G5 Vehicle Tracker, Mutualink interoperable communications solution, Vidyo HD multipoint videoconferencing with LTE as well as Ultra-broadband and IP networking.
Alcatel-Lucent’s ngConnect is a program that is designed to provide next generation services and applications to various entities including customers from network, consumer electronics along with application developers and content providers.
