Coffee company Starbucks Corporation’s (SBUX - Free Report) popular beverage Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) will now contain real pumpkin and will be stripped of artificial caramel coloring in response to consumer demand for natural ingredients instead of artificial flavors
The new PSL will contain espresso, milk, Pumpkin Spice Flavored Sauce, Whipped Cream, Starbucks Vanilla Syrup and Pumpkin Spice Topping. The beverage will also contain real ingredients like sugar, condensed skim milk, pumpkin puree, fruit and vegetable juice for color and spices including cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove.
With more people starting to “eat right”, many food companies have begun stripping their packaged food products of artificial ingredients like food colors, flavors and sweetener. Their motto is simpler processing of food products and a higher quantity of real ingredients, so as to ensure the high nutritional quotient of the food. Keeping up with this changing trend and the resulting customer demand, this Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) company plans to introduce the healthier version PSL this autumn.
Another seller of Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Panera Bread Company is also planning to make the Pumpkin Spice Lattes more healthy, as part of its Food Policy. The St. Louis, MO-based fast casual restaurant operator will replace all artificial preservatives, colors, flavors or sweeteners with natural ones, which will be available at the restaurants starting Sep 9. Panera Bread’s PSL will contain real pumpkin and milk without any artificial growth hormones. This beverage will be naturally sweetened and will not contain any harmful fructose corn syrup or aspartame.
In order to improve the health quotient of its cereals, food giant, General Mills Inc. (GIS - Free Report) has committed to remove artificial flavors and colors from its entire cereals portfolio by 2017.
Earlier in Feb 2015, The Hershey Company (HSY - Free Report) announced its plans to use simpler ingredients like locally produced milk, roasted California almonds, cocoa beans and sugar in its products. It will eventually shift to simpler ingredients for its popular chocolate brands like Hershey’s Kisses, Milk Chocolates and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars.
