Airline Stock Roundup: AAL, JBLU, LUV in Focus
There is no denying the fact that the surprise victory of Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential elections was the major talking point in the last week. Though the election of the new U.S. President was undoubtedly the most important development last week, the airline space had its own share of news.
American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:(AAL - Free Report) – Free Report) was the major news maker, courtesy of its bullish outlook on unit revenues for the fourth quarter of 2016. The outlook was revealed alongside October traffic number announcement. JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ:(JBLU - Free Report) – Free Report) also unveiled its traffic report for October. The rise in revenue passenger miles (RPMs, a measure of air traffic) and load factor (percentage of seats filled with passengers) impacted the stock positively following the release of its traffic report.
The past week saw Southwest Airlines (NYSE:(LUV - Free Report) – Free Report) launching Cuban operations. Following the launch, Cuba became the ninth country to receive services of the low-cost carrier. In an environment-friendly move, Alaska Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alaska Air Group (NYSE:(ALK - Free Report) – Free Report), operated a flight (Seattle to Washington, D.C.) using jet fuel that included a 20% mixture of the forest residuals biofuel. The carrier was also in the news due to its expansion-related and customer-friendly updates.
On the price front, NYSE ARCA Airline index climbed 3.72% to $102.01 buoyed by the news of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway betting on major carriers like American Airlines, Southwest Airlines Co and United Continental Holdings Inc. (NYSE:(UAL - Free Report) – Free Report).
