Turkish Lira And TUR ETF Plummet After Russian Ambassador Shot In Ankara

Read MoreHide Full Article

Both the Turkish lira and the iShares Turkey ETF (TUR - Free Report) are falling in afternoon trading Monday following reports that Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, was shot dead while speaking at an art gallery in Ankara.

As of 1:09 P.M. EST, the Turkish lira was down 0.76%, while the TUR ETF was down about 2.12%. The iShares Turkey tracks the MSCI Turkey Investable Market Index, which is designed to measure market performance in Turkey and consists of stocks primarily traded on the Istanbul Stock Exchange.

According to CNN, Ambassador Karlov was speaking at an event celebrating the opening of an art exhibit when the gunman opened fire.

“In a video circulating on social media that shows the shooting of the ambassador, the gunman is heard shouting, ‘Allahu akbar (God is great). Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria! Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria!,’” a CNN report said.

The Russian news agency RIA reported that the ambassador died as a result of his wounds, and a horrifying video circling around social media appears to show the attacker shoot Karlov before making his impassioned speech.

While the world waits for more information on today’s tragedy, Russia has beefed up security around its embassy in Turkey; meanwhile, investors appear to be playing the uncertainty safely by selling off stocks in the Turkish markets.
