Amazon.com Inc.’s (AMZN - Free Report) film production division, Amazon Studios has scheduled its original movie, Gleason, to premiere on Dec 29.

The series will be available on Prime Video via the Amazon Video app on TVs and connected devices like mobile, Fire TV, and online at Amazon.com/originals, at no additional cost to prime membership.

Shares of Amazon have been steadily treading higher on a year-to-date basis. The stock has returned 12.53% compared with the Electronic Commerce industry’s gain of 6.37%.

About the Movie

Gleason is based on the true life story of New Orleans Saints player – Steve Gleason – who was diagnosed with the condition ALS at the age of 34. In the story, Gleason shows courage and tries to fight his disease, in the best possible way, after he learns that his wife Michel is pregnant with their first child.

The movie made its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters on Jul 29, 2016. It had received great positive critical response and was also included among The National Board of Review’s Top Five Documentaries of the Year.

The film has been directed by Clay Tweel and produced by Fujita, Kimi Culp, Seth Gordon, Mary Rohlich and Kevin Lake.

Our Take

The increasing popularity of tablets, smartphones and web-connected TVs has enhanced online-video viewing and continues to attract consumers as well as leading technology companies, like Alphabet (GOOGL - Free Report) and Apple Inc. (AAPL - Free Report) .

Therefore, Amazon is leaving no stone unturned to boost its digital media sales and attract new viewers, by adding varied series and movies to its content lineup and making Prime Video more attractive.

With intense competition in online video content, majors such as Netflix, Inc. (NFLX - Free Report) , Hulu and HBO, are seeing substantial success. It is natural for Amazon to compete against them with successful acts of its own. These new shows are expected to help Amazon penetrate further into the growing streaming market, at a much faster rate.
