International Business Machines Corporation (IBM - Free Report) is reportedly collaborating with Rice University on sensors that it plans to put inside robots to enhance security for the elderly who live alone.

Year-to-date, the stock has underperformed the Zacks Computer - Integrated Systems industry. It returned 21.06% compared to the industry’s return of 29.05% over the same period.

The prototype named IBM Multi-Purpose Eldercare Robot Assistant (IBM MERA) is being tested at the company’s "Aging in Place" lab based in Austin, TX. The lab design can create situations that the elderly face at home.

The company is said to develop a robot for elders to help them lead safer lives and avoid untoward situations.

On the Learning Curve

MERA runs on IBM cloud and a Softbank Pepper robot interface and uses IBM Watson and Rice University’s CameraVitals technology to record videos of a person’s facial expression.

MERA’s sensors can detect vital signs such as changes in motion, audio or scent and Watson-powered speech recognition help it know when to call for help in case of an accident.  The robot can also detect changes in blood pressure and heart rate and respond to health related queries.

However, according to senior technologist at IBM Research Susanne Keohane, there is a long way to go for the robot before a commercial roll-out.

Keohane indicated that the robot will have sensors to detect sources of important data from inside the home and download that for a better understanding of its resident. Its camera recordings will be of great use to clinicians and care givers and help them take better decisions.

Is Aging Population a New Market?

The United Nations predicts the number of aged people worldwide to reach 1.4 billion by 2030, up 56% from 2015. It appears that with the new technological advancement, IBM is targeting this section of the society. The move will certainly give the company an early advantage over peers such as Alphabet (GOOGL - Free Report) , Microsoft (MSFT - Free Report) and Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) and add to its revenues.
