Read MoreHide Full Article

AMETEK Inc.’s (AME - Free Report) fourth-quarter 2016 earnings of 58 cents per share came in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Earnings were up 3.6% sequentially but down 8.6% year over year. Earnings also matched the midpoint of the guided range of 57 cents to 59 cents.

On a year-over-year basis, revenues were negatively impacted by weakness in oil and gas and metals markets. However, these markets have started to stabilize.

On the positive side, the company continues to see solid growth across its Ultra Precision Technologies business. This, in combination with a strong portfolio of differentiated businesses, is expected to help the company post better results, going forward.

In the quarter, the company took up realignment initiatives. The company continues to reap the benefits from the execution of its four core growth strategies of operational excellence, global market expansion, investments in product development and strategic acquisitions.

The numbers in detail-

Revenues by Segment

Revenues of EIG were up 6.3% sequentially but down 2% on a year-over-year basis to $616 million. The year-over-year decrease was due to weakness in oil and gas business, which was largely offset by contribution from the acquisitions of ESP/SurgeX, Brookfield Engineering Laboratories, Nu Instruments and HS Foils.

EMG sales were down 2.4% sequentially and 0.7% on a year-over-year basis to $356.9 million. The decline was mainly due to foreign currency headwinds. Organic sales were flat year over year. Packaging, Interconnects and Engineered Materials businesses have stabilized.
