Facebook first responded to the popularity of Snapchat with the launch of Instagram Stories over the summer. Similarly to Snapchat’s “Story” feature, Instagram Stories allows users to post pictures and videos to a new feed that deletes itself after 24 hours.
Just last week, the company doubled down on its Snapchat cloning with the debut of “WhatsApp Status,” a very feature that is based on the “delete after 24 hours” principle. WhatsApp Status also allows users to decorate their pictures with designs that should remind many of Snapchat’s popular filter options.
These two new features are thinly-veiled attempts at copying Snapchat’s innovative user experience, but you can rest assured that Facebook doesn’t care if you call it a copycat. The social media behemoth will rest easy knowing its already doing some things a bit better than Snapchat is.
For one, Instagram Stories also includes live video streaming, which has proven to be a popular feature across multiple social media platforms. Also, WhatsApp Status boasts end-to-end encryption, which could sway the privacy-focused users that are skeptical about how Snapchat holds its unopened messages.
