Verizon Led Consortium for LTE Bags Benchmark Data Speed

Read MoreHide Full Article

In the U.S. wireless industry, Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ - Free Report) , Ericsson (ERIC - Free Report) and Qualcomm Inc.’s (QCOM - Free Report) subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, have recently set their benchmark achievement by attaining a download speed of 1.07 Gbps (gigabits per second). The trio claims to be the first in the industry to have surpassed the Gigabit speed barrier of 1Gbps on 4G LTE.

The 1.07 Gbps speed was achieved in a trial in an Ericsson laboratory using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X20 LTE modem (which supports Category 18 LTE speeds), along with commercial silicon and network infrastructure. These speeds are part of the companies’ ongoing evolution of LTE technology.

This achievement builds on the recent announcement by the consortium in reaching 953 Mbps (mega bit per second) in a joint commercial network deployment, with support for Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) technology.

Further, the 1.07 Gbps speed was achieved using only three 20MHz carriers of FDD (Frequency Division Duplex using separate transmit and receive frequencies) spectrum, achieving new levels of spectral efficiency for commercial networks and devices. These efficiencies will enable the delivery of the Gigabit class experience to more customers and lead to new wireless innovations.

Additionally, licensed band combinations with 12 LTE streams with tri-cell carrier aggregation of FDD spectrum, 4x4 MIMO (multiple in, multiple out) per carrier and 256 QAM modulation of each carrier (radio) signal was also used in the lab trial.

On a similar note, in Jan 2017, Ericsson and Qualcomm had joined with AT&T Inc. (T - Free Report) to test the initial 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) 5G New Radio (NR) specification, using 28GHz and 39GHz spectrum bands, Qualcomm’s prototype devices and Ericsson providing base station solutions.

Industry leadership

Verizon was the first national wireless provider to introduce 4G LTE speeds in 2010, spurring an ecosystem of video viewing and data sharing at a pace not realized before. Since that time, Verizon and its partners have continued to evolve the 4G LTE network, enabling it to carry more robust applications and solutions for consumers, enterprise customers and government agencies.

Verizon continues to drive innovation for customers by deploying the most advanced technologies to in the real world environment. Qualcomm Technologies has been at the forefront of driving Gigabit LTE in the industry.

Ericsson is working to improve end-user experience and to develop new functionalities and advancements with greater spectral efficiency on LTE. Achieving 1.07 Gbps with Verizon and Qualcomm Technologies on a commercial chipset is a big milestone on the road to 5G.

Winding Up

A combination of the latest 4G LTE wireless technologies is required to reach these industry-leading speeds. Carrier aggregation, a key technological advancement, bands and multiple spectrum channels allow data to flow more efficiently, resulting in dramatically faster peak speeds.

These technologies produce record speeds for wireless technology and pave the way to commercialization with such strong partnerships.

Moreover, Gigabit LTE is gaining momentum globally and in the United States. With leading operators and infrastructure vendors like Verizon and Ericsson, Qualcomm assures to continue to develop and deploy innovative technologies to power future networks and devices.
