In this episode of ETF Spotlight, I talked with Kevin Carter, founder of the Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (EMQQ - Free Report) .

E-commerce industry in emerging markets has been growing at a rapid pace, thanks to fast expanding middle class, rising incomes and growing use of internet and smartphones.

Kevin and I discussed how the growth of emerging markets consumer is a long-term trend as these countries account for about 90% of global population aged under 30.  Most of these new consumers are coming of age in the new technologically enhanced world.

Cheap smartphones with limited functions are enabling these consumers to shop online. That’s why companies like Alibaba and Tencent are creating so much value.

Kevin talked about how his personal experiences inspired him to create EMQQ that seeks to capitalize on this unprecedented growth story.

Launched on November 13, 2017, EMQQ holds some very well-known companies like Tencent (TCEHY - Free Report) , Alibaba (BABA - Free Report) , Baidu (BIDU - Free Report) , JD.com (JD - Free Report) , and then there are many others that we are not very familiar with.

Kevin explained how companies are selected and weighted in the index. He highlighted many companies with explosive growth potential, that will become well known in coming years.

Emerging markets were big winners last year and did well in 2016 as well after years of underperformance.

EMQQ was one of the best-performing emerging-markets ETFs last year. Please listen to the podcast for reasons why this outperformance could continue.

Many of EMQQ’s holdings are listed in the US, and thus they have better corporate governance than old, large corporations listed in their own countries, including government owned enterprises.
